The time and effort that goes into learning crochet is one thing, but reading crochet patterns can be a challenge, especially when you are first starting out. Staying with the most basic stitches when starting out is the best way to avoid frustration. It's good to start out with items you can make with the basic stitches, like wash cloths and scarves.
An easy cloth pattern would be as follows: Chain 25 stitches (or more if you want the cloth wider), single crochet in the 2nd stitch from the hook, make a single crochet stitch in each chain across. At the end of the row, chain 1, turn your work and then you single crochet in each stitch across the row. At the end of the row chain 1, turn your work again and then single crochet in each stitch back across and continue until you have the cloth you want. Making that cloth is an excellent way to get started with crochet.
If you prefer a scarf, this would be a good beginner project: Chain 20 (do more if you want it wider). Single crochet in the second chain away from the hook, then single crochet in every chain until you reach the end of the row, chain 2, turn your work, double crochet along the row and continue with these steps until you have a scarf that is as long as you would like. Rather than doing all double crochets, you can alternate your rows, one row using double crochet stitches and one row using single crochet stitches.
Once you have these basic stitches mastered, I would suggest trying a granny square. Granny squares are one of the easiest patterns to learn. When you are comfortable with making granny squares, you can move on to changing colors in your squares. Not a very difficult thing to learn. If you have difficulty, it might help if you read the pattern instructions aloud as you follow along and also re-read each instruction a couple of times.
One big suggestion is something I did a lot of while trying to follow patterns. Do not try to second-guess the pattern instructions. As I was working on a project from a pattern, I would encounter something that seemed a bit strange and did not make sense to me and I would get stuck on it because of my doubts, That would really discourage me, and I would often give up trying for quite a while.
Despite my frustrations I kept going back to it and would continue to try patterns that seemed to me like they had errors in them and I would expect my project to be a failure. I would just do what the pattern said, even if I thought it sounded wrong and even though I thought it would be messed up! I bet I know what you are thinking!
Try not to forget that this is something you are doing for your own enjoyment. It has been proven that crochet is a great way to relieve stress once you are comfortable with it, so enjoy it and the beautiful things you make.
