Some charities use outside companies to handle their car donations. That way they don't have to set up all the facilities and management themselves. I'm a big fan of the local Salvation Army. With two growing kids, I make a trip to the drop off center about once a month. I haven't worked up to donating a car yet, but you're right - there's a sense of fulfilment from knowing that this old whatever-it-is will fill a need an be really useful in someone else's life.
