What Do Frogs Eat?

Posted July 19th, 2010 in Pets-Animals by admin

So we were sitting down to enjoy a nice Sunday dinner with a few friends and my daughter looks over at me and says "Mommy, what do frogs eat?".  I am a grown woman and it was at that moment that I learned I had absolutely no idea what frogs eat.  I had never owned a frog, never touched a frog and never really been around one other than the occasional glimpse into a glass aquarium at our local pet shop.

So, leaving me curious, I now decided that it was time for me to learn more about frogs.  In the event a frog question ever comes up again, I will be armed with the knowledge necessary to fire off an answer!  And so we went to the pet store and bought a small African dwarf frog that was just as small and cute as can be.  We named him Gonzo.

So, now we can get down to business.  Since we own a frog and I have done a fair amount of research I think I can give you a pretty good idea of what they eat.  So here we go:

What do frogs eat:

As you may have guessed a frog's diet depends greatly on the type of frog in question.  Frog's vary quite a bit in size and habitat so their food also changes between types.  For the African dwarf frogs like mine, they love eating frozen blood worms, but you could also feed them frozen brine shrimp as well.  At just about any pet store you will find dried blood worms, these will work, however, my frogs did not seem to like them.

Larger frogs and many toads eat live crickets and other small insects such as moths and flies. I know that handling live insects can be tough for a lot of people, so many bug haters out there, so take this into consideration before purchasing your new pet.  The fire bellied toads and green tree frogs, both common pet frog species eat small insects, especially crickets as mentioned above.

Some of the much larger frog species like the American bullfrog will eat just about anything that they can get in their mouth including guppies and other small fish, mice and even small birds and reptiles.  This is not a pet for the faint hearted animal keeper.

Insects and small critters are pretty much the norm for frogs and their diet is dependent upon their size and habitats.  You should always consult the shop keeper at your local pet store or contact an expert before buying a new frog to understand the eating expectations that will be placed on you for caring for your amphibian.  Before I purchased my first frog, I never would have guessed how much fun they are to watch and care for, it truly is a unique experience.

Well, I hope you all enjoyed the information and the next time your child asks the age old question of what do frogs eat, you will have an answer!  Thanks for stopping by.
